Ulysses, Julia and the children live in a house at 9th and Barton street in St. Louis City. Upon graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1843, Grant was ordered to join the 4th U.S. During his stay at the barracks, Grant's became acquainted with his West Point roommate's younger sister, Julia Dent, who lived nearby on the White Haven estate.
He first met Julia Dent, his future wife, at her family home, named White Haven. From 1854 to 1859 the Dents, Grants and an enslaved African-American workforce lived on the property. This part of the Midwest produced Grant, Lincoln, John Hay, John Nicolay, and fourteen Union generals, including John Logan, and John Schofield. Grant excelled at math and riding, “was devoted to novels, but not those of a trashy sort,” and promptly fell in love with his classmate’s sister, who lived five miles west of the Barracks.

His experience running this forced labor camp may have influenced him in his later roles as the Union general in the Civil War and as President of the United States. He tried real estate collections and could not make a go; he was passed over for the job of County Engineer. In 1860 he and his family moved to Galena, Illinois, so he could take a job as a clerk in his father’s leather-goods store. Forced labor was used extensively in the farming and maintenance of the 850-acre plantation. Using the "best improvements in farm machinery" owned by Colonel Dent, field hands plowed, sowed and reaped the wheat, oats, Irish potatoes, and Indian corn grown on the estate.

In 2021, St. Louis became home to a record number of refugees and asylum seekers, including over 500 people from Afghanistan. Even more people seeking safety in the US will be coming to St. Louis in 2022. To respond to these ongoing resettlement needs, a number of funding partners have established the St. Louis Welcome Fund. Pettus Foundation will accept applications on an invitation-only basis twice a year.
Our contributions help fund cultural engagement, STEM preparedness, youth empowerment, and support for our heroes and first responders. Another profession of Grants was that of a firewood salesman and delivery man. Ulysses felled oak and hickory trees on the 80 acre Hardscrabble farm, split the trunks, and packed chords for delivery in the city.

Eager for a home to call his own, Ulysses S. Grant began working on a log cabin for his family in 1855. At the time, Ulysses was farming the 80 acre property a half-mile north of White Haven and wanted a new home close to the fields. Although Grant labored to build the house, Julia did not care for it and the Grant family soon moved back to White Haven following the death of Julia's mother, Ellen.
According to historian Lorenzo J. Greene, "St. Louis…was the only place in the state where the organized black church achieved any measure of success." It is unknown whether Dent allowed the people he enslaved to attend services. As Ulysses S. Grant rose to prominence as the victorious general of the American Civil War and the country's 18th president, his connections to White Haven continued. Grant purchased the property after the Civil War and hired a caretaker to live at the main house and manage the farm. During his presidency, Grant invested money to make the farm a horse breeding operation. He also helped design a large stable for his horses that was completed in 1871. The Grants considered retiring to White Haven at some point in time, and President Grant recalled in a speech that St. Louis was one of the only places he had ever felt a connection to.
When Ulysses was sent west in 1852, Julia was not able to go with him, being pregnant with their second child. She returned to her parents' home after stopping at Ulysses' parents' home in Ohio, where Ulysses Jr., was born. Grant's army pay was insufficient to bring his family out to the West Coast, and he tried several business ventures to supplement his income. Suffering from depression and loneliness after being separated for two years, Grant finally resigned from the army in 1854 and returned to White Haven. Chapter membership is open to anyone with a national membership who also wants to be affiliated with a local chapter. The St. Louis Regional Chapter invites grant professionals from the greater St. Louis metropolitan area, including surrounding counties and municipalities in both MO and IL.
Hawaii gives to pre-selected organizations and does not accept unsolicited applications for grants. The Pettus Foundation typically funds direct services and small capital improvement. The Foundation does not fund advocacy, research programs, or systems-level initiatives. Annual grants in the three priority areas of entrepreneurship, job creation, and cultural arts. These grants are the focus of this request for proposals and are described below.
We seek to create partnerships with effective, community-based organizations that work to improve the lives of others through access healthcare. Each foundation has its own set of funding criteria and submission deadlines. In order to be considered for a grant, we recommend that nonprofit organizations reach out to the St. Louis Community Foundation staff to learn more about each funder’s priorities. The St. Louis Community Foundation provides grants management and administrative support for private and family foundations. We assist foundation trustees with their grantmaking decisions in an effort to help them fund creative and sustainable programs.
Army at Jefferson Barracks, a military post five miles south of White Haven. Ulysses met Julia at White Haven and they fell in love, later marrying in 1848. Army, Grant resigned his commission and decided to try his hand at farming at White Haven. From 1854 to 1859, the Grant and Dent families, along with enslaved African American laborers, lived and worked at White Haven.
